      <g:title>Goddess of Sorcery</g:title>
<g:description>❖ Goddess of Sorcery ❖ ArtPrint

«Αἰαίην δ' ἐς νῆσον ἀφικόμεθ'· ἔνθα δ' ἔναιε
Κίρκη ἐϋπλόκαμος, δεινὴ θεὸς αὐδήεσσα,»

«E arrivammo all'isola Eea: vi abitava
Circe dai riccioli belli, dea tremenda con voce umana»

(Odissea, X, 135-6; traduzione di G. Aurelio Privitera.)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Circe, in Greek legend, is a sorceress, daughter of Helios, the sun god, and of the ocean nymph Perse. She was able by means of drugs and incantations to change humans into wolves, lions, and swine. The Greek hero Odysseus visited her island, Aeaea, with his companions, whom she changed into swine. But Odysseus, protected by the herb moly (a gift from Hermes), compelled her to restore them to their original shape. He stayed with her for one year before resuming his journey.

— 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵, "Gorgon" (1981)

The protagonist of this illustration is Medusa, one of the three Gorgons. She was a beautiful mortal, the exception in the family, until she incurred in the wrath of Athena, either due to her boastfulness or because of an ill-fated love affair with Poseidon. Transformed into a vicious monster with snakes for hair, she was killed by Perseus, who afterward used her still potent head as a weapon, before gifting it to Athena.
